Frequently Asked Questions.

Screens display colours using RGB (red, green, blue) light, whilst printing uses CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) ink. RGB has a wider colour range, meaning some bright colours you see on screen simply can’t be reproduced with printing inks. Additionally, screen brightness and calibration affect how colours appear digitally.

The most frequent issues we encounter include insufficient bleed (background elements not extending past the trim line), low resolution images that appear pixelated when printed, text placed too close to the edge that risks being trimmed off, and files saved in RGB instead of CMYK colour mode. Other problems include using non-embedded fonts that may not display correctly, transparent elements that can cause unexpected results, and incorrect document dimensions. Following our print guidelines carefully will help you avoid these issues and ensure your project prints exactly as intended.

Whilst the basic requirements remain similar (correct bleed, CMYK colours, high resolution), there are some differences to consider. Digital printing is more forgiving with shorter runs and allows for variable data printing, making it ideal for personalised materials. Offset printing requires plate setup so is better suited for larger quantities, and can achieve more precise Pantone colour matching. Offset also handles solid colour coverage more consistently across large print runs. We can advise on the best printing method for your specific project and ensure your files are optimised accordingly.

Consistency starts with using the correct colour specifications. If your brand uses specific Pantone colours, provide these references and consider offset printing for exact matching. For digital printing, supply CMYK values rather than relying on on screen RGB colours. Request printed proofs rather than just digital proofs, as these show true colour reproduction. Keep in mind that different paper stocks and finishes can affect colour appearance, so test printing on your chosen material is worthwhile for critical brand projects. Maintaining a physical swatch library of your printed brand colours also helps ensure consistency across different print runs and suppliers.
